New series of aerial photos with beadwork. This is a collaboration with photographer and friend Leroy Grafe. He has generously shared these drone captured images of western landscapes. I have made editorial decisions about cropping and printing and based my designs on historic beadwork and weaving patterns.
The work is slow going, with a lot of care taken to preserve the delicate surface of the photo. I am sewing directly onto and through the paper, and am not using pre-punched holes. It is the same technique I use on a fabric matrix.
These images overlaid with geometric patterns are my way of illustrating a manner of interacting with the landscape. An attitude of interaction with the landscape that is at the heart of indigenous abstraction.
